Question Authority: Before It's Too Late

Published February 14, 2010

Sure you want a job - but not just any job. In my years as an employment counselor, I've seen many candidates leap at any position that came their way, only to regret the decision bitterly.

"How could I have known I'd be a square peg in a round hole?" one disappointed jobseeker howled after a short, disappointing tenure in an ill-suited job.

The answer then, as now, is simple. Ask the right questions. And listen closely to the answers. Here are some questions that may help you uncover information you need to make a wise choice:

• Would you describe a typical workday and the things I'd be doing?

• What duties are most important for this job?

• Will there be times when the person doing this job will be busier?

• What are the key challenges for someone in this position?

• If different shifts are involved, how soon will I receive notice about my work schedule?

• Would I be working on my own or as part of a team?

• How much travel, if any, is required?

• Is this a newly created job or would I be replacing someone?

• How would I be trained for this position?

• How will I get feedback on my job performance?

• Will I be working for more than one supervisor?
