Talk the Talk

Published January 24, 2010

Certain words and phrases are known irritants, but some rankle worse than others. When networking or interviewing, work on polishing your verbal skills so they shine as brightly as your smile and your polished shoes. The survey research center at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., found five utterances cited as most annoying. The top five offenders determined in a random telephone poll of 938 U.S. residents:

“Whatever” (47 percent said this word is the most cringe-worthy.)

“You know” (25 percent)

“It is what it is” (11 percent)

“Anyway” (7 percent)

“At the end of the day” (2 percent)

Expunge this vexing vocabulary from your speech and you’ll be one step ahead of the competition.

Interviewers hire people they like, you know? And if you’re annoying, they’ll be like, whatever, and kick your candidacy to the curb.
