It's Who You Know

What’s the best way to contact a company where you’d like to work? Comb your network for someone who knows someone employed there. Ask for a referral or — even better — an introduction.

“If you’re just cold-calling, the likelihood of getting a response is miniscule,” says Brad Karsh, president of the Chicago-based career consulting firm JobBound. “Employers are more receptive and responsive if you were referred by someone they know.”

If it falls on you to initiate contact, a phone call is a bolder and better first move than an e-mail.

Call and say you were referred by so-and-so and would like to learn more about the company, career opportunities or a specific position — whichever the case may be — and then request a brief meeting.

If voicemail goes unanswered, follow up in a few days with an e-mail using your mutual contact’s name in the subject line. Example: “John Smith referral.”

Know when to move on.

More than three tries borders on stalking.
